Go For a Swim
03:53
|
|
||
Go for a swim
before the day is dead
when the treetops are red
to empty a crowded head
Down you lay
on the bottom of the lake
in the mud and the moss you stay
where it's quiet and safe
Until the haze of the surface
calls your name
You cannot remain
Oh, what a shame
And when you return
there's a beautiful bird floating around
close enough so you could touch
but he's already into the sky
so you watch him fly
away in his fright
Does his mind say
what mine would say:
'Hey, What is happening here?'

Smile Big, Child

I once had a lovely girl
but she ran off to see the world
and she left me in a hurry
but I knew she had a longer way to go
I once had a cigar box
and in it was a message that said
'Once you've found the limit, boy,
once you've found the limit, it don't exist no more.'
A rail station philosopher
left it here along his way
and I'll leave it along mine
Mr. Ray was old and grey
and he stood up one day and shouted
'Now's my time to shine!
Now's my time to shine!'
and then he died
He used to own a gallery
where people looked at the famous books he owned
but no one read a single page
No, they just paid and kept their children quiet
In many years I'll come across
that girl who saw the world, and I'll say
'How was your adventure?
All these years apart,
and you're still deep in my heart"

Outside
03:25
|
|
||
I was a leafless tree
that could lend no shade
to a passing traveller
only punctuate his weariness
A spirit crept inside me
filling me with a hope
that would soon carry me
down a diamond mile
into devastation
And when this angel
exited my body
and stood there over me
I was given a new mask
And when I looked
through the eyes
back upon all my selves
I couldn't stop laughing
Isn't that strange

Three Ring

We stop in a little town
of which I've never heard
We camp out
just outside the airport
It always feels like I'm just starting
Tomorrow is a big day
but tonight is already lonely
and the pink sky is smiling
like a wide-eyed child
Somehow I got here
Somehow I am here
Tonight I dream I am a lion
mocked by a whip and a chair
I wonder how long I can make it
out there, alone in the mountains
The day comes, and the night
always ending each other
I lift a dead railroad spike from the ground
and think about the last train car
that passed it over
Soon I will be leaving
Soon I will be gone

Don't Let Your Time Go
02:23
|
|
||
Don't let your time go
because time let go
is just time that you now owe
and don't forget to wake up
because there's so much
Don't bet on a possibility
just because it means
more than anything
Sometimes you just have to choose
that you're gonna be happy
Don't bet on a possibility
just because it means
more than anything

The Colorado
05:46
|
|
||
Into the water of the mighty Colorado
we sprang from a rocky cliff
left there by her endless, exotic saunter
And just after sunset
when everything starts to come alive
and all the sounds start to change
we all head back home again
I recall that you came
along with us that summer
but it's funny, I haven't said your name
in as long as I can remember
But I hope that you don't forget
the mighty Colorado
And I hope that I don't forget
the mighty Colorado

You Are Here
02:56

|

We pulled over on the 95
out beyond the lights of the city
and under that moonless desert sky
I stood there shrinking in its infinity
We watched a meteor shower
from the parking lot of an AM/PM
We had a zine show
We were on our way up to Reno
and just a moment before
that felt like such a big deal
Inside the store
the clerk's looking through the paper
for a one bedroom apartment
She sees a casita across town for rent
First thing in the morning
she will pack up and get going
for the first time on here own
to her little home
just a few few from the garden
belonging to Melody Schaefer
whom I saw out in it on Sunday
I said hello and asked if she was ok
She said that she's got good and bad days
with her husband gone back into his old ways
Everyone is just getting on best they can
And way out west
doing my best
it was time that I got back into the van

Conventional Wisdom
04:24
|
|
||
I fell into a strange scene
running somewhere from someone
with some plans for me
There was a man in the market
with golden eyes
that could see only green
He climbed up on a table to speak
He said that I must
as he found his feet
be afraid, as he would be
if his vision were more like me
He started to shout as loud as he could
'All for one!'
I don't think the crowd understood
'All for one! All for one!'
until there were none
When I got home
my uncle was there
He said, 'I've been thinking
and I've got something to share'
He said, 'A thing that bends
that's supposed to be straight
again and again
will easily break'

Do You Dare
03:49
|
|
||
I don't believe a word you're saying
You'll play the victim to the end
And by the way, you were wrong again
about the things
that you've been blaming on a friend
Why do you insist on going it alone?
On a walk in the woods
on a mountain
you find a cave and you go in
but down the road
you can gone to a canyon
with a river that flows and flows
Why don't you believe me
or do you even care?

Passage
02:16
|
|
||
I said a bittersweet goodbye
to you today
Oh, I wonder what's waiting
for you down the way
Sitting at the table with a coffee
after you had gone
I watched a spider build a web in the window
he and I, alone
I started thinking about
what it is to live in a moment
and whether I am now
and maybe that I'm missing the point
of what it means entirely
by pondering the if and the how
We're really only here for a moment
and then we're in the wind
I hope you keep in touch
when you get where you're going
and live well, my friend
